Independent restore program

I’ve been using Duplicati 2 for a while now on multiple machines. What has piqued my interest is whether there is any (informal) specification of the storage format, or, relatedly, whether somebody has attempted to implement an independent tool to restore the files (not using any Duplicati code). If it hasn’t been done, I’d like to try to do so. (I usually try to do such things for backup tools, purely for peace of mind – in case Duplicati stops recognizing existing backups.)

A Python script is available that can restore files from a Duplicati backup, without using any code from Duplicati:
