An alert is something urgent, needing action, often in response to something user asked.
The ngax popups sort of fit this model, were a little annoying, and were extremely visible.

We are currently working with a designer to overhaul the notifications.

Since notifications just came up in Warning count bug? and I got into the designer availability (and commented on the continued nuisance alerts…) how’s that going?
