A few days ago, I received the following errors from one of my backups:

I was initially running the previous Beta (around a year or so old I believe) and have since upgraded to the current beta (2.0.6.1_beta_2021-05-03).

Checking on Jottacloud, the two files mentioned do seem to be present. However, elsewhere in the log I see this error:

Hmm error 500 sounds like a back-end error to me, but I have no experience with Jottacloud. Is it possible they are having issues with their service?

Looks like they had a temporary issue.

However, it’s not the initial errors I’m that interested in, more the repeated ones I’m now getting on every backup.

Any advice on how to repair them?

Jottacloud seems to be reporting a 404, but I can see them in the web interface.

I appreciate this probably means it’s an issue with Jottacloud, but is there anything I can do in Duplicati to get around this? What if I were to delete these files at Jottacloud?

Possibly premature because you don’t know what their problem is. Deleting files breaks things forever.
You can use Verify files button to test some while watching About → Show log → Live → Warning.

On the other hand, where do you see this?

If that’s Jottacloud, do they download? I wonder if they can manage to list files but not actually give them.

Yes, I see them in the Jottacloud web interface. I’ve just checked, and I can download them from there.

Sorry, I missed going back to that while looking at the last two one-liners (those tend to lack the details).
I don’t know what you can do about Jottacloud 404 errors (or 500 errors), and the relationship with them
is potentially touchy because they have their own apps, don’t publish an API, but tolerate third-party use.

I’m not familiar with them, and hope they won’t do things you don’t want, but have you tried official apps?
These presumably use the API (which BTW does seem to have some potential limits against over-use).

I guess another way to probe what works and what doesn’t is to try to set up a new backup, or to run an Export As Command-line to get a URL to use with the Duplicati.CommandLine.BackendTool.exe to see whether anything works there. Obviously, don’t damage the backup. If you make a new empty folder, try Duplicati.CommandLine.BackendTester.exe on it for a not-all-that-long automated test to explore health.

I’m not seeing a flood of complaints about Jottacloud, which I guess is good. You may have to isolate the issue further, but unless you can get it with an official Jottacloud tool, their support will likely not do much.

I suspect they had a short outage, which happened to be while my backups were running. Two of them were hit with similar errors on the same evening.

I think you’re probably right about Jottacloud being able to help. However, I was hoping for an indication of something I could do with Duplicati to try to recover from this.

Sadly, this is the latest in a number of niggling little errors with Duplicati, almost all of which stem from the times a database rebuild is required. Have to admit to losing faith in it a little, it needs a bit too much TLC for my liking for some backup software.

In the past I’ve generally just re-seeded backups when running in to problems like this. I was hoping to avoid this though.

I’ve been running some tests in parallel using borgbackup backed by Lima Labs storage. That’s generally been working pretty well (although has had its fair share of teething problems as well). As it happens, my Jottacloud annual sub is up this month, so I need to have a think whether to renew it, or switch over to the alternative solution.

It depends on how many files are unavailable, and until you do a thorough check, e.g. with a larger or all sample count on The TEST command with a URL from Export As Command-line, nobody knows extent. Note, however, that downloading all files to find out if they actually are there will be a pretty slow operation.

You can live with a small number of lost dblock by deleting them officially (using Jotta UI, however if it can rename them, then changing the prefix to something other than duplicati can hide them), then running The LIST-BROKEN-FILES command in Commandline (after some edits to convert from backup syntax) will tell you what backups of what source files those files affect. After that, The PURGE-BROKEN-FILES command will remove the broken source files from their backup versions, and you’re normally done then.

This all requires a working Jottacloud though, and we don’t know if we have one until some tests get done.

Recovering by purging files describes all this, but it’s not something you want to do unless forced. Safer to explore the issue as suggested, IMO, and ideally get it with a Jottacloud app and go talk with Jotta support.

I’d note that your 404 files seem to be dindex not dblock, but it’s an incredibly small sample. If the only files with 404 errors are dindex, and if your DB is original (no attempt to Recreate it), then deleting or hiding the dindex files via Jottacloud web UI, and then running Repair should upload new dindex (if Jottacloud works).

I don’t know if this is one of them. If Duplicati were trying to download a file that wasn’t there, I’d say maybe it lost track of its files, but you said that the files that 404 are there, and download from the Jottacloud web?

Again, I can’t guide you without any information on how many files have gone unavailable. I can’t tell if they will return someday courtesy of Jottacloud. I can’t promise you that starting the fresh backup will work, but a small one would be an easy test on basic sanity of things. The CommandLine tools would also be tests.

We need to figure out where things stand. Maybe Jotta changed their API or something, although I’d think there’d be more reports of it, even from Duplicati uses, however https://usage-reporter.duplicati.com/ has Jottacloud use at off-the-charts small (unless I missed it – you can go look), SSH (SFTP) has the largest usage of any clearly remote protocol. You could certainly try Duplicati with Lima Labs to see how it works.

2.0.6.1 does have a rare regression with servers where it winds up using ecdsa keys. A fix is in progress.

I have some tests that I run with various backends and am not seeing any issues with Jottacloud.

Thank you for testing. That matches the lack of crises that I can find in web search, so maybe damage is limited (extent still not known), and maybe recovery (or do-over) is possible. If move to SFTP is preferred, rclone might help, but it would be really interesting if it can read the files that Duplicati is getting 404s on…

I also have issues with Jottacloud, already for 3 weeks now. I couldn’t download the affected file, not even with the Jottacloud CLI. Support is investigating already for 3 weeks but is not really communicating. I’m not sure they even can restory my file.

I’m dropping Jottacloud as my cloud provider - if I would have needed this file I’d be in serious problems right now.
