Error when backing up to Google Drive

Hi, I am a new Duplicati user and encountered two errors like the following after I paused the backup for 5 minutes. Duplicati says that there are two successful backups so I don’t know what these errors mean. Can anyone help me sort this out?

Was this one at 5/25/2019 1:35:44 PM one of them? This looks unsuccessful, but maybe others were OK.

New warnings/errors occurring after updating to 2.0.4.5 has the reference, but they were part of the debug effort for an old problem that was fixed once, has come back, and hasn’t yet been debugged/fixed again…

The cause is better understood, and is often backing up a file that’s being actively modified during backup. Specifically, it’s often the journal file for the Duplicati local database for the backup that’s currently running. The summary line doesn’t give enough detail, but you can look at server log (About → Show log → Live) at Error level (Warning would also work, if you want details on the Warnings as well) to see further details.

Database field Local database path shows your local database, and when use it sometimes generates a temporary file which is the same except with a -journal suffix so the name ends in .sqlite-journal.

Warning: sqlite-journal errors 1400 gives two solutions, if this is what happened. One is to exclude the file, and another is to use –snapshot-policy (if you have Administrator privileges) to get a stable view of the file.

Being a little more specific about backup folders can also help. It looks from the Warnings like you do C:\ which is probably going to run into some other locked file problems (so benefit from snapshot) eventually.

Thank you so much! I don’t quite understand all of what you said but you said maybe one of the backups is corrupt? When I tried to backup another version today, it gives me some other errors. However, I think this is because my clock on Windows 10 is messed up. So do I need to delete all backups and start again to make sure they are all healthy?

The clock being wrong looks like it’s going to force a new backup, then you can try the other suggestions.

EDIT: New backup refers to what you said (more or less). If it was just a temporary wrong time, you could delete the offending backup. Depending on how complex the configuration is, starting over might be done simply by deleting that backup job (take up its offer to export first), take up its offer to delete backend data, then import again into new job. That should be the cleanest restart, however other ways may be possible.

Lack of errors is a good first sign, although I’m not sure you should count on the ones you got saying away.

Duplicati automatically verifies a small sample of backend files for integrity after every backup, and you can increase this with an Advanced option –backup-test-samples to any number you like or all for all volumes. Backend files are quite a bit different than source files, so at least gettiing a little in the next section is good.

More thorough proof of a good backup is to do a sample restore to see if things look right. For even better verification (and to simulate an emergency loss-of-computer situation) you could try a direct restore onto a different computer. Restoring to the same computer has a performance optimization where pieces of files that are currently on the computer are used to help the restore, so it doesn’t rely totally on the backup files. Adding Advanced option –no-local-blocks in the configuration temporary will probably stop the optimization.

Your verification options range from automatic to very thorough depending on how far you want to take it…

Permission denied is normal unless you installed Duplicati as a Windows service, running as SYSTEM. Running as you, Duplicati is limited by Windows in the same ways that you are. Restoring to a different location that you actually have permission to write to would prevent errors. Testing restore directly to the original location is somewhat dangerous. If anything goes wrong, you overwrote the original (only) copy.

Backups are easier than proper restores. Many files (such as these) can read by anyone but not written. Other files (such as these) are really system files, and would be better “fixed” with Windows techniques.

Google Drive configuration doesn’t accept --auth-username or --auth-password (as it says). Did you ever configure such things for another storage type that might have leaked over? One somewhat strange case was also just reported where a password manager is believed to have filled out things and caused that…

Sorry for the late reply. Thank you @ts678, I tried the -auth-password link but I still got the same warnings when I tried to restore. In addition, I received 6 other errors after a recent backup.

I feel that Duplicati just keeps outputting different kinds of errors and warnings. Can I safely ignore them for the purpose of backing up a small personal computer?
