Slow Backup to OneDrive

Hello everyone,

unfortunately my English is not so good but I try to explain my problem as good as possible.

I have a second hard disk with about 180,000 files, which I would like to have stored encrypted on a cloud service. In my case it is my OneDrive subscription, where I have 1 TB free for my current 350 GB files.

I set everything up nicely yesterday and got it started. That was around 9 pm. Now it’s almost 9 o’clock and it’s only done 30-40%. So in 12 hours it hasn’t even done half of it.

I had actually planned to run this backup every evening so that I would always have an up-to-date backup even if changes were made, but at this rate I can forget about it.

What am I doing wrong? I haven’t changed anything in the options. What is the reason for this and why is it archived in 50 MB Zip? Wouldn’t it make more sense to use the full 4 GB or to use another format like .rar, where even more GB are possible? Unfortunately I don’t know much about this but would like to understand it.

I love the software and would like to continue using it, but unfortunately it is currently not suitable for my purposes… :frowning:

Best regards

Not necessarily so. Duplicati uploads changes, so initial backup is a full upload. Later are partial.

Features

Incremental backups
Duplicati performs a full backup initially. Afterwards, Duplicati updates the initial backup by adding the changed data only. That means, if only tiny parts of a huge file have changed, only those tiny parts are added to the backup. This saves time and space and the backup size usually grows slowly.

Deduplication
Duplicati analyzes the content of the files and stores data blocks. Due to that, Duplicati will find duplicate files and similar content and store them only once in the backup. As Duplicati analyzes the content of files it can handle situations very well if files and folders are moved or renamed. As the content does not change, the next backup will be tiny.

Are things still moving in the top status bar and the home screen progress display for the job?

What’s your promised or measured Internet upload speed, which typically is hard to fully use?

Some technologies such as cable modems are asymmetrical, and upload is slower than down.

The backup process explained (simplified)
How the backup process works (technical)
Choosing sizes in Duplicati (not always 50 MB, and explains the tradeoffs of using larger size)

This would prevent block-level deduplication, and incremental backup is harder or not possible.
