Trying to understand why would duplicati delete yesterday’s backup
when the settings are to keep one a day for the first week and there is no other backup from yesterday.

The root issue is that “smart retention” keeps only one backup per day, and you are running one backup per day. Duplicati is unforgiving in this “1 day” window so if there are two backups and they are only 23 hours 59 minutes and 59 seconds apart, it will delete one of them.
You can “fix” this by telling Duplicati to keep all backups for the first 7 days. Since you run one backup per day, the end result is what you’d expect – all of those backups will be kept.
Change your backup retention to “custom” and use this:
7D:U,4W:1W,12M:1M
There have been some discussions of making Duplicati less strict in this regard, but I don’t know if any progress has been made there. In any case it’s pretty easy to work around it with a custom retention.

I just changed it. I guess it will take a week before it confirms the be behaviour but it is logical.
