Prevent open browser when backup runs

Hello,
I’m running Duplicati - 2.0.4.5_beta_2018-11-28 on Windows 10.
Each time the backup starts the browser open the Duplicati page.
Is there any settings to prevent this behaviour?
I’ve other instance of Duplicati running on other windows PC, they run without opening the browser.

Thank you,
Davide!

Hello @davide.gironi, welcome to the forum!

I’ve heard others report having this happen but I’ve never seen it myself.

I assume these are scheduled backups that just suddenly make your default browser appear when they start - are you running Duplicati as a service or using the Tray Icon only?

Duplicati.GUI.TrayIcon Is in my “Startup” applications list in Task Manager. So I think it’s not started as a service.
Do I have to install it as a service? If so, have i to uninstall it and re/install or there’s another shortcut?
Thank you!

Duplicati runs in two parts - the “server” shows the browser GUI and does the actual backup work while there (optional) tray icon shows server state (paused, running, error, etc.) and provides quick access to the GUI.

When the tray icon runs, it starts its own instance of Duplicati server (unless you tell it not to) running a the logged in user. This has a few limitations not seen it running Duplicati as a service:

  • Duplicati can only back up files the user has access to (not a problem if you only want to back up your stuff and not other users or system files)
  • Duplicati will not run (or exit) if the user is not logged on or logs off (so not great for servers were a user doesn’t always log in)
  • Duplicati can’t use VSS (unless your user can) to back up in-use files (think email files while Outlook it Thunderbird are running)

So there’s no “need” to run as a service - and until we figure out why the browser is opening I’m not even sure that will solve the problem. (And yes, there is a manual “conversion” path to service so you don’t need to start anything over).

Thank you Jon, I’ve checked another Windows PC I’m running with Duplicati. It’s in “try icon” mode too. And I do not have this issue.
To you where can I take a view to check why the browser is opening?

Possibly a simpler experiment would be to do a Quit on TrayIcon, open a Command Prompt, go to Program Files\Duplicati 2 and start Duplicati.Server.exe manually to see if the problem can be seen. One warning on doing this is that stop is hard (unless a bug was fixed), and needs to be done with Task Manager End tasks. Checking for processes starting with Duplicati would be good anyway. For TrayIcon or Server, expect a pair. Should this be enough to workaround the (still mysterious) problem, going to a service probably also would.

I suspect this is done in TrayIcon, which doesn’t have any direct logging. It usually behaves better than this, however indirect clues might be obtained by logging what can be logged by –log-file and –log-file-log-level Information or higher (it gets noisy though). Perhaps some clue as to what is going on can be found there…

If somehow you want view with a debugger, I suspect it’s going through here, so you’d break and view stack.

I think the log as no clue, as you can see below. If i found time I’d compile it again and try with the debugger on the function you are pointing me at. Thank you!
