I am UNABLE to STOP Duplicati! Probably because my system has a very old version of mono. And how did this happen? Well… Until 2 years ago, I used Windows, so I have a habit of restoring the OS partition every few months to try to solve strange problems. So I just restored an 8 months old drive image backup of the Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS partition a few days ago and then I updated Duplicati and ran a recreate database. But now it is IMPOSSIBLE to stop the backup process… I feel reasonably sure that Mono hasn’t been updated.
Even better feature: Duplicati should actively (semi-)automate the install or update of Mono!
What version of Duplicati are you using?
There was an oversight with the 2.0.5.1 release in that the package didn’t indicate mono >= 5.0 was required. This has been corrected and hopefully it won’t happen in the future.
If the package manager can confirm version I’m not sure if it makes sense for Duplicati to also check, but I suppose it couldn’t hurt.
If systemctl stop duplicati doesn’t work you can try killing the process. Then update mono per these instructions, then restart duplicati and retry your database recreation.

I didn’t know the systemctl stop duplicati command, but I found the guide to installing Mono that you also refer to and suddenly it installed and that stopped Duplicati. But in the meantime Duplicati had created about 100 backups - one every 10 minutes…!
I have included a Duplicati Monitoring email below, which lists about 80 of the about 100 backups Duplicati created before I managed to stop it by installing the latest Mono.
Now Duplicati has been recreating the database for several days. Probably because of those 100 extra backups…
I have Duplicati - 2.0.5.1_beta_2020-01-18. I presume there are no newer versions here on Ubuntu, but I will check when the Recreate database has finished.

Actually I think we did see someone else with that issue. Old mono version was causing Duplicati to crash at the end of the backup job, and it never recorded that the backup job was run in the database. So when Duplicati restarted, the schedule kicked off again.

But when I choose Edit Configuration there are 2 lists of advanced options, but none of them contain any of the 2 options mentioned in the above error? So where/how do I do that?

Using the Command line tools from within the Graphical User Interface is likely the easiest way, although that page generally offers up the backup command, and you need to change it to the command you want then tweak syntax accordingly, e.g. list-broken-files or purge-broken-files. The minimum difference is that backup requires a list of source paths in the Commandline arguments box that those others do not want.
Recovering by purging files demonstrates use of those two commands. I hope they’re able to help here…
