Duplicati does not run anymore

Hello
Excuse my English, I do not speak well.
I’m running Ubuntu 18.04 and I installed Duplicati 2.0.3.3
I can not launch it anymore.
It mills a moment and then nothing.
I launched it from the terminal and got this error message.
To test I created a new user and I installed Duplicati.
With this new user, I manage to launch it.
Can you help me ?
Thank you in advance.
Pascal

Hello @Pacalou, welcome to the forum!

Is this an update or a fresh install?

Has it ever worked for you on this machine?

Hello,

  Thank you for your reply.

In fact, I reinstalled Ubuntu and Duplicati and now it works well.

By cons I have another problem (which I had before also).

When I want to back up system files (etc, usr, sys), the backup starts but remains blocked (I left it for several hours).

  Is it a permissions problem?

You can not start duplicati in super user mode.

I also wanted to tell you that on Ubuntu, Duplicati is the best backup solution I've found and the most reliable.

With others there is always some problem that can not work.

  Congratulations on your work

  cordially

  Pascal

I’m happy to hear it is working for you now - and thank you for using Duplicati!

When you say with system files it is “blocked” do you mean Duplicati stops working or that those files are not backed up?

If it’s that they are not backed up then most likely it is due to permissions and only by running Duplicati as a privileged user can the files be included.

Please note that Duplicati is designed mostly for backups of data files, not an entire system. For example, if you backed up your entire hard drive with Duplicati then restored it to a new drive all the files would be there but that new would not boot into Linux.

Ok thanks for your explanations.

But I can not start Duplicati in super user mode.

    I get this error message:

"Server has started and is listening on 127.0.0.1, port 8200

              Gtk-Message: 14: 06: 07.866: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

I do not want to back up the entire system but only a few system directories.

    Thank you for your help.

    Pascal

Thank you for explaining - I though you meant you were not allowed to run in super user mode, not that it was broken.

There’s a similar issue here, but was related to a user building their own Duplicati:
Gtk and glib errors when I build. Am I missing a dependency?

Did you build your own or install from a package?

OKAY.

I installed the package for download on your site.

    Version 2.0.3.3.1

    I read the post.

              For Canberra I get this:

              "pascal @ UbuntuAPaca: ~ $ dpkg --get-selections | grep canberra

              gnome-session-canberra install

              libcanberra-gtk3-0: amd64 install

              libcanberra-gtk3-module install amd64

              libcanberra-pulse: amd64 install

              libcanberra0: amd64 install "

Apparently, I would miss these 2 lines:

              "Libcanberra-gtk-module install amd64

              libcanberra-gtk0: amd64 install "

              That would come from that?

I reinstalled Canberra and now I have all the lines.

When I do sudo duplicat I get this:

"Server has started and is listening on 127.0.0.1, port 8200"

But nothing happens, my browser does not open and I do not have the icon in the taskbar.

So I tried to open it normally and I get that:

    "pascal @ UbuntuAPaca: ~ $ sudo duplicati

              [sudo] pascal's password:

In fact I made tests and it is the sys directory that blocks.

When I back up the usr directories and etc there are no problems.

And yet the permissions are the same on the 3 directories with root in user and root in group.

What is there in /sys that you would want to backup (or restore)? This is a virtual filesystem (similar to /proc), probably has no disk files in it (on my Linux system a “sudo du -s /sys” says 0, meaning no disk blocks), and might cause somewhat unpredictable results, because it has devices and controls expecting specific formats.

What’s the “/sys” directory for?

sysfs - The filesystem for exporting kernel objects.

sysfs

Ah ok !

I will leave this directory quiet.

Thank you very much for these clarifications.

Good night

Pascal
