I upgraded from 2.0.8.1 to 2.1.0.4 recently, and I noticed in the logs that (for the same backup set) Duplicati is now verifying 54 files at the end of each backup, where it used to only verify 3:

It presumably was when it was done, below. It’s a more meaningful sample, but you can adjust
backup-test-percentage as you like. It used to be 0. That left backup-test-samples (default 1) in control. That’s not much for a big backup. Percentage allows test to adjust the sample with size.

Thanks for the information. However, that doesn’t seem to be how it’s behaving in practice.

Looking at the list of files on my backup destination, their makeup is as follows:

Type Count 0.1% # tested
dindex 8761 9 18
dblock 8752 9 18
dlist 228 0 18
Total 17741 18 54

So, it appears that Duplicati is taking (backup-test-percentage)% of all files on the destination, and then testing that number of each type of file, which doesn’t seem to be how this feature was intended to work.

I can’t quite agree, though I think the feature was always confusing. Percentage added to that.

  --backup-test-samples (Integer): The number of samples to test after a backup
    After a backup is completed, some (dblock, dindex, dlist) files from the remote backend are selected for
    verification. Use this option to change how many. If the option --backup-test-percentage is also provided, the
    number of samples tested is the maximum implied by the two options. If this value is set to 0 or the option
    --no-backend-verification is set, no remote files are verified.
    * default value: 1

So what’s a sample, one might ask?

The TEST command (in old manual – new manual seems to lack info, but it’s still in progress):

A sample consists of 1 dlist, 1 dindex, 1 dblock.

Above explains how 1 becomes 3, and 18 becomes 54. I’d agree the help should be improved.

What I find amusing (wrong?) is the help percentage (between 0 and 100) of files to test which must be thinking files. Then the help starts talking about samples. Feel free to file an issue.

I agree. The intention was to let the number of tested samples (a triplet) grow with the size of the backup, as the previous scheme with 1 sample was insufficient for large backups.

I have made a PR that changes the logic to take the largest count of any type (dindex in your case), and then calculate the number of samples based on that. This would make 0.1% equal to 9 in your case, and then test 9 samples (27 files in total).

I have fixed the help text in the PR as well.
