Dizzying and confusing Duplicati setup

Trying Duplicati for the first time. The new interface is really amazing, but Duplicati has a very confusing setup. On four occasions alone I was asked for some sort of password:

(1) Passphrase for the server when I ran Duplicati for the first time
(2) A popup telling me the database is unencrypted (with no obvious solution how to fix it)
(3) Password for encryption when creating a new backup
(4) A “Passphrase used to encrypt backups” at the final step of the backup creation (the same page where I can change volume size). Not even sure what this meant, as I thought I already picked a password already

Hi @adsfgbfndfjtr, thanks for the feedback.

For (1), most users should not use this, so maybe we should just remove the dialog.
The users that need this would then need to go to the Settings page.

For (2), the solutions are described here:

Going forward, the plan is to use the operating system secure storage to auto-configure this (at least on Windows and MacOS).

For (3), that is the encryption passphrase and quite important.
We are considering if this should also be stored in the operating system secure storage.

For (4), that seems to indicate you are digging into the advanced options?
We expect most users to not dig into the advanced options, but generally, all options are in there.
You can use this to override any option to your liking, mostly useful if the user interface has a quirk that does not allow your specific value.

I agree with your suggestion (1). I also completely agree that using the OS to secure (2) and (3) is essential. I’m actually a bit surprised dupliciti does not do it already.

For (4), I was digging through advanced options. Most users wont do that, but it is very confusing to see an advanced option there for a setting I thought I had already set. Maybe there should be some message saying that these are overriding any previously set password?
