Confused - trying to update to the stable version - trayicon not showing up

I was running the Canary version.

Canary (being a very current testing release) has fixes here that Stable lacks.

If you don’t want to be a tester, you can probably use Canary in a limited way:

There is no real workaround for this, but you can use the TrayIcon from the canary and connect to the stable release if you like.

Thanks. So maybe a .zip install of potentially-less-trustworthy Canary to some folder, then use that only as an indicator and control panel to the trusted server version that’s installed in the usual way.
