Backup gets stuck and fails

I found out about Duplicati last week and really want to use it as it offers everything I’m looking for. However, the initial backup always gets stuck while the “Backup_ProcessingFiles” action is running. It gets stuck on the same file for some reason. If I zip the problematic file, kill Duplicati, then run it again, the issue is solved, but then another random file gets Duplicati stuck…

I eventually gave up and let Duplicati run for 24 hours after getting stuck yesterday and Duplciati eventually failed with this error:

The same error appears during restore. Another aspect of this error is that backups are not listed in the Backup history log, however when attempting to restore they are properly listed in the list of available chronological backups from the remote backend. ``` Failed: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Not sure, this looks very technical I don’t know why Duplicati fails like that, but the internet is filled with posts with this same issue I’ve experienced - just frozen on a random files and then fails.

I’ve switched to Duplicacy and the backup finished with zero issues. I also like that Duplicacy uploads compressed chunks without using the Windows temp folder, filling it up with copies of all my data.

Indeed after changing it back to reasonable values (50MB) backups are again working correctly.

What’s yours? Note that this doesn’t directly explain the hang, but looks at the big error provided.
Severe misconfiguration might cause odd effects, so this is also a good first thing to get clear on.

The Duplicati hangs I know of are usually when it backs up its own database and might deadlock.
If you see other cases, you can see if there’s a resolution. If not, more info will be needed here…

This is another sign that you may have told Duplicati to put a whole backup into one enormous file.
The temp folder should by default have limited 50 MB files of data passing through on their way up.

When performing asynchronous uploads, Duplicati will create volumes that can be uploaded.

I actually did increase the volume size to 1gb from 50mb, I didn’t realize that would cause an issue? Why even give us the option to do so if it causes problems?

That said, even at 50mb volumes, the temp folder will still get full pretty quickly with the same total size but with more individual files, wouldn’t it?

AFAIK OneDrive (free version) limits the maximum file size to 250 Mb.

There are legitimate cases when some size change is best. Click the link on Options page to see more.
If you don’t have Duplicati handy, the link in the program goes to Remote Volume Size and a discussion.

No. Click limited link below. The limit is specifically there to prevent putting too much in upload queue.
When limit is reached, no more data is packed, meaning source file reads may stop until space clears.

To prevent Duplicati from generating too many volumes, this option limits the number of pending uploads.
