Today we’re announcing a major update to the Duplicati Console: Remote Backup Management. Together with the ability to pre-configure and activate agents remotely, we’ll enable IT teams to deploy Duplicati to many machines quickly and easily, and enable you to manage, monitor, or restore any of your machines from one place.
This release is a big step forward for Duplicati, with a number of features focused on making it easier for IT teams to use Duplicati… Read on to learn more about what we’ve shipped, as well as future iterations that lay the foundation for a zero trust backup management solution that you can use at scale.
Most enterprise backup and data management platforms aren’t zero trust
A lot of companies are moving to zero trust architecture, and a critical component of cybersecurity and ransomware recovery or disaster recovery is of course backup. Yet many of the backup and data security capabilities shipped with legacy and single-point security solutions fall short of zero trust principles. Support for a distributed workforce is typically shoehorned in, and references to “zero trust” are often just lip service:
- Customers still have to rely on a third party to provide storage
- The encryption keys for your data might be owned by a third party
- There’s no separation between customer data and platform data
The Duplicati Console never touches your backup data or credentials—it’s just a hosted coordination layer that’s blind to what’s going on beneath the surface.
Duplicati started as an open source, trustless backup solution for individuals, and now we’re excited for IT teams to also be able to take advantage of the flexibility and control of Duplicati without doing all the heavy lifting.
New features to simplify enterprise backup management
The Duplicati Console supports a number of key backup use cases. On top of the leading security and performance of the Duplicati backup utility, the console now allows teams to deploy, manage, and monitor their backups from one place, remotely. Here are the key features we’re most excited about:
Duplicati is known for trustless, encrypted backup which gives users complete control and flexibility, without ever exposing your data or credentials to our own servers, or a third party. Staying true to that commitment, with this release we’ve made it possible for IT teams to remotely manage backups across devices, from anywhere in the world, without ever exposing your data to the public or to Duplicati servers.
This capability removes the need for onsite access or manual intervention, making it easier to manage distributed or hybrid environments without compromising security. Being able to remotely manage a local backup utility without exposing that machine to vulnerabilities, or exposing any data to the platform, is unique to Duplicati.
For large-scale deployments, Duplicati now offers an agent-based version with no local user interface. This option, which is managed through the Duplicati Console, enables IT teams to pre-configure and activate agents remotely, streamlining deployment.
Integrate your Secret Manager of choice and enable your remotely managed machines to connect to your backup destinations to activate backups, without your credentials ever touching Duplicati servers. This is a critical component of maintaining a zero trust security posture. Duplicati also supports all major SSO providers.
We’ve also added advanced reporting, enabling IT teams to easily see backup history and status across organizations, roles, and backup profiles, as well as set notifications to surface anomalies, potential issues, and non-compliant machines automatically.
Looking ahead
Many of the other backup platforms and legacy solutions have simply tacked on functionality as the IT architecture and cybersecurity landscape has shifted. At Duplicati, our aim is to offer a much needed open source alternative that includes all the enterprise-grade features and security controls you need, comes with an intuitive UI, and is trustless by default.
This release lays the foundation for future developments and improvements to Duplicati for enterprises, such as:
Backup Profile Configuration in the Console
If you have hundreds or even thousands of machines, it’s critical to tailor backup settings to meet the specific needs of different departments or regulatory requirements and ensure settings and security are compliant across all of them. Today, you can do this by including a config file in your deployment. With our coming release of profile configuration in the console, you’ll be able to setup, apply, and monitor compliance across your machines from one place. Through integration with your device management platform, you’ll be able to deploy at scale with a few clicks—no additional configuration effort required.
User Roles and Permissions
Enable limited access to the console for specific use cases, while safeguarding administrative functions for IT teams and meeting compliance requirements. For instance, if you want to enable people on your team to self-serve restore, but nothing else, you could grant them access via a user role that only has the ability to see reporting for their own machines and restore them.
