Hi all,

after updating to the last but one beta-release in Dec '24, the tray icon application crashes after some time of running (i.e., the process disappears from Windows task manager and the icon from the taskbar, no backups are done till restarting the application). As far as I can see, this is independent of the question whether a job has already been executed or not. This does not happen if Duplicati was started manually (see below for the setup). The setup I use is as follows:

System: Win 10 22H2 64bit, latest patches all installed
Duplicati 2.1.0.5 stable (problem occures since version 2.1.0.2 beta)
Duplicati.GUI.TrayIcon.exe started via Windows task scheduler, in order to give it elevated rights (I need VSS to backup open files);

- Windows user logon used as trigger;
- task executed as standard user with elevated rights (tested running as “System”-process; doesn’t work at all);
- task set to delay one minute after logon (tested with different settings - no effect);
- Duplicati itself set to delay any activity for 30 sec after launch (tested with different settings - no effect);
- three backup jobs configured, two using a local hard drive (USB), one MS OneDrive (problem occured for the first time before the OneDrive job was set up);
- all tasks set to be halted on battery power.

The backups themselves run without trouble (as long as I remember plugging the external drive in, but that’s another question, of course). What I tried so far is de-installing and re-installing versions 2.1.0.2 through 2.1.0.4, and finally updating to 2.1.0.5 yesterday, to no effect. I didn’t find any crash-logfiles or error events in Windows. Also, before 2.1.0.2, the said setup worked for more than two years on the same system without trouble.

I’ve got not even a clue where else to look for a reason (or if I’m just missing something right in front of me). Any ideas?

That’s unfortunate, as starting from terminal might say something informative.

[Where are application crash logs?](https://forum.duplicati.com/t/where-are-application-crash-logs/20280) suggests places to check.

[v2.1.0.2\_beta\_2024-11-29](https://github.com/duplicati/duplicati/releases/tag/v2.1.0.2_beta_2024-11-29)

The change log highlights the extensive changes since 2.0. Some new issues arose.

FWIW (and I wish it wasn’t necessary), I do that the clunky way with this on shortcut:

 ![image](https://forum.duplicati.com/uploads/default/original/2X/6/69a039ff58dfb2f3cfb35654251d3e0806283e43.png)

This brings up UAC prompt. After satisfying that, shortcut runs a batch startup script, which leaves a terminal window around. If it fails that way, maybe it’ll say something.

Hopefully you’ll find something in the Windows Application event log, e.g. from .NET.

Thanks ts678; I thought I’d checked all the places listed for containing logfiles - but it seems that I’ve missed something in the first place, as indeed .NET throws errors related to Duplicati in Windows error reporting. At least today the timestamp (10:16 AM today, if this is of any relevance) fits the moment I became aware of the tray icon “vanishing” (indeed: it’s there, and on mouseover, it vanishes…). The same report shows every day, at different times - I couldn’t figure out any regularity. Especially, it seemingly doesn’t depend on jobs being executed or not yet. The only clue I have so far is, that the “vanishing” (and, probably, the errors I’m talking about) happens once after Duplicati is launched by the Win10 task planner. And here’s the Gobbledegook the error reporting “tells” me:

Can anyone interpret this? I can’t, as I’m not a programmer at all.

- Are these IDs of any relevance/importance? I can report them, too, if necessary; but as it says “ID” and I have no idea to what they refer, I’d rather leave them out in the first place. Maybe I’m paranoid.

Take Care,

Hopefully the Duplicati programmer can help. Some previous notes:

Except yours wasn’t log output. For the first, invalid password shouldn’t be fatal.

I think the login attempts can come from the open browser tabs, or the TrayIcon.
For browser tabs, you could either start logging or close them and see if it helps.

Logging depends on browser, but it’s often in developer tools or click on F12 key. Goal is to see what went in, although I wouldn’t expect much without user action.

What browser is this? If you close Duplicati tabs, it might not matter. Otherwise, it might. Refresh seen is the kind of thing that might happen after 15 active minutes.

Developer might have a better idea.

This is an error message from the webserver. It means that the login did not succeed because the request had no previously created authentication tokens (stored in a browser cookie).

It is normal and will happen if you try to access the WebUI without being logged in.
It is not a crash, it is just logging that the authentication code threw an exception.

No, they are only relevant for debugging locally on the machine.

Windows has long had a quirk where a TrayIcon can stay visually after it crashed. But it is also possible that the mouse-over is triggering the crash. @ts678 did you report seeing that at some point?

Do you notice any correlation between the time it stops and the messages? I am fishing a bit here, because without an error message of sorts, it is almost impossible to figure out what happens.

Do you happen to see other messages in the event log that could be relevant? Usually crashes are logged in Windows / Application in EventViewer.

I can’t find it now, but at one point I thought mouse-over would eventually crash, however I think conclusion was it was a delayed crash happening by itself, and mouse-over just made the icon vanish.

I can now confirm that it is not mouseover which causes the crash, at least at my machine. At least once I found that Duplicati, after being started (prooved by the job logs), had crashed already before I looked at the systray for the first time at that day.

No, not any more. I thought so in the first place, but I’ve monitored this (as far as my work admitted me to do so) for the last couple of days, but there is no coincidence.

I use Firefox (most recent stable release at a time), but I don’t open Duplicati tabs usually - the normal setting for me would be to have Duplicati started automatically, and not looking at it until I need a backup (so, hopefully, never [again]…). From time to time, but not on a regular basis, I would check for error warnings. Only now, as I know that Duplicati doesn’t work as it should, I have a closer look at it.

With some digging into Windows error reporting - I went to places I’ve never been before - I found another error report. One stems from Feb '25, after a row of dozens of errors of the server-login-type (all with the same timestamp, one second before this one):

Hope this helps, for this is all I can contribute.

I also checked whether I could find a setting within the task scheduler, but: nothing. The only difference I can figure out is that the said type of crash occurs when I start Duplicati via the scheduler; and that it does - as far as I can see - not happen if I start it manually, i.e. via desktop icon or start menu (always as admin/with elevated rights); and that start with scheduler does not work at all if I define a path to start in (independent of the actual path). If I define a path in the task, nothing happens at all. The desktop icon seems to set the installation path as starting path by default; I didn’t change that.

I have found at least one possible cause for this.
The way the image displayed is loaded was not properly closing old images.
After some time, and on a machine with plenty memory, this could cause over 10000 images to be in an open state, and at that point Windows will refuse to open more.

I am not sure what causes the frequent image reloads, but I have fixed the issue by keeping the same images open instead of re-opening them. This fix is included in [canary 2.1.0.112](https://forum.duplicati.com/t/release-2-1-0-112-canary-2025-03-26/20413)

Hi out there,

is there something new in this regard? It’s bin three quarters of a year now than Duplicati stopped working properly for me, and one third of a year since the last conversation on this topic. And no, that the fix for the thought cause is included in some canary built doesn’t help me. I’ve been fine using a beta version as long as a release was not available, but now as there’s a release out and I’m using Duplicati on a productive system, I’m not going back to any testing version.

I must observe that, while still “beta”, I’ve never had any trouble with Duplicati. The very moment it turns to “release”, it has become next to unusable (a backup I’ve got to remember to look after on a day-to-day-basis doesn’t do it’s job). I have to say I am disappointed. I’d thought that things would be fixed faster with having a “release” version.

I know that I’m only a “free” user, who has no claim to support whatsoever. But it doesn’t increase my trust in a product I rely on for _backup_ if nothing happens concerning a severe issue for such a long time. As I’m going to have my system re-set/re-installed in a couple of weeks (being forced to do the Win11-update, finally), I’ve got to think for another solution if this is not solved till then.

It seemed settled, pending releases. They are published in [Releases category](https://forum.duplicati.com/c/releases/10).

[Release: 2.1.1.0 (Experimental) 2025-07-17](https://forum.duplicati.com/t/release-2-1-1-0-experimental-2025-07-17/20903) (following a long series of Canary)

A somewhat longer answer (which might sound familiar) came out 14 days ago:

This must be 2.0.8.1\_beta\_2024-05-07. You hit this on 2.1.0.2\_beta\_2024-11-29:

> [@Deoquaerus](#):
>
> Duplicati 2.1.0.5 stable (problem occures since version 2.1.0.2 beta)

I’m tempted to blame [2.1 beta changes](https://forum.duplicati.com/t/release-2-1-0-2-beta-2024-11-29/19577) which were huge, not it turning to “release”.

I’m surprised that there aren’t more reports, and I hope the fix fixes it for your case.
What would be sad would be if this untested fix doesn’t fix it, and there’s more wait.

Can you reproduce the problem on a non-production system, and see if Canary fixes it?

IMO it is now worth asking development if the most-stable (was a beta, now a stable) releases will maintain the ends-at-beta pattern of a long wait for updated most-stable.

2.1.0.4\_stable\_2025-01-31 did get a follow-on [2.1.0.5\_stable\_2025-03-04](https://forum.duplicati.com/t/release-2-1-0-5-stable-2025-03-04/20279) for reason:

> [@Release: 2.1.0.5 (Stable) 2025-03-04](https://forum.duplicati.com/t/release-2-1-0-5-stable-2025-03-04/20279/1):

but what if an issue isn’t critical, or seems to affect only one or a few people severely?
Way back in the all-volunteer days, there was a goal of a Beta every 6 months, I think.
That was reduced from about 9, which then stretched way out when the help was thin.

I’m kind of wondering how 2.2 will go initially, but what about ongoing non-hotfix fixes?
There have long been discussions of how to manage source and releases. Any news?
Dev staff are doing features and fixing bugs, but test and release side seems old-style.

That is pretty much the nature of any change; it hopefully fixes things but also introduces the risk of breaking stuff. Generally, I would say that the stable release fixes a large number of rare issues that causes backups to stop running, but I see the irony in having a “stable” that is less stable.

We take the stable release quite serious, so there is sufficient time to test and catch issues, but that also means that once a stable release is out, we generally do not update it unless there is a serious issue. Instead we start a new release cycle when the next set of goals has been reached. We have started the path to a 2.2 stable release now, with [Release: 2.1.1.0 (Experimental) 2025-07-17](https://forum.duplicati.com/t/release-2-1-1-0-experimental-2025-07-17/20903).

That is the plan. We branch of at some point from the development, and then “mature” it through the experimental→beta→stable cycle. In this period, we can add in fixes that have been tested in canary, but the goal is to ship a stable that is unmodified from a beta release, so we are as sure as possible there are no unknown issues introduced for users who are not willing to risk issues.

> [@ts678](#):
>
> but what if an issue isn’t critical, or seems to affect only one or a few people severely?

The tradeoff here is that releasing a new stable has a major impact as all users (more or less) will be asked to update. If we update, say every 2 weeks, that gives update fatigue, and we have to spend a lot of time testing. At the current rate, we seem to be hitting longer than 6 months release cycle for the stable release, which was large caused by a the new UI needing to be adapted to all the quirks that were introduced over the years.

I think the need for stable releases dictates that we need to do it this way. If we are fine with merging in hot-fixes into a stable release, and then releasing it directly as a new stable without a beta period, we can do hot-fixing, but I think this is risky.

Release 2.3 is about make the install and update flows much smoother, including bringing back some form of auto update. Once that version is out, the situation will be different, as the work required by the end user is much less, and then we can consider a different release cycle.

Usage reporter probably has stats on Canary and Experimental testers heading into 2.2. Beta channel might have shrunk, as 2.1.0.2 Beta and 2.1.0.3 Beta get updates to Stable.

Without testers having a variety of configurations and usage, test time is never sufficient. Fortunately one can find common problems faster, but rare ones may need a large base.

Maybe 2.3 and future will bring relief to the long period of time people must endure bugs.

I’ve just seen that there is a new beta (2.1.2.0) out. As “beta” has been working up until the end of last year and the main task I’m performing these days uses its own backup mechanism, I can imagine to eat my words on not going back to a non-stable version and give it a try. However, some questions do remain in advance:

- Does this beta release include the changes discussed here, or else: Is the problem this thread is about also adressed by 2.1.2 beta?
- Is there a possibility to revert to the last stable release (AFAIK that should be 2.1.0.5), once I’ve tried 2.1.2 beta and see that it doesn’t fix my problem either/or introduces new issues?
- I might, however, not be able to test this on Win 10 anymore; the forced change to Win 11 is about to happen soon.

Unfortunately, I’ve got no other Windows system running, so it’s the only way I see to “test” anything anyhow, if ever.

By the way: Thank you for your effort! I appreciate that you’re trying to find out what’s happening. I have to use software I’ve paid for, and I’d be happy to get _any_ answer from the so-called support…

With roughly one year gone, several new versions (including 2.3 by now, in which ts678 seems to have set some hope) tried to no avail, and no information whatsoever to be found elsewhere, I’m forced to conclude that the problem resides somewhere within my system. Seemingly, I’m the only one affected. As there are no (crash-)logfiles created, no system messages created and me not being a tech pro: Is there any hope for me ever to debug this? The behaviour hasn’t changed at all, Duplicati reliably crashes somewhen through the day, so I have to remember re-starting it to get the daily backup jobs done.

Unfortunately, I also didn’t manage to figure out which backup software I could use as an alternative, otherwise I would have changed by now. …

Reliably crashing can be helpful. Are you still starting from Task Scheduler?
If so, have you tried starting any other way, e.g. from terminal as right user?
Since you need elevation, maybe you can launch from an “Admin” terminal.

I assume you’re still looking in event log, but terminal “might” show an error.

Or maybe it will stay up. Basically, see if you can get a way to avoid crash…
I solve my VSS issue by starting from a batch file, so answer a UAC prompt:

 ![image](https://forum.duplicati.com/uploads/default/original/2X/f/ff26b905bac73f9d30308a0519251e36608c14dc.png)

Having shortcut do escalation was more flexible for me, but Windows Service
possibly could also do the job, but it’s a bit awkward to attach tray icon to that.

Does TrayIcon actually work right the way you launch? I see info it might not…

Regardless, it’s not critical to use. Testing Server without Icon can be tried too.

Thanks ts678. I try to answer the questions as good as I can, but I start to realise that there won’t be a solution for me.

\>\>Reliably crashing can be helpful. Are you still starting from Task Scheduler?\<\<

Yes.

> > If so, have you tried starting any other way, e.g. from terminal as right user?
> > Since you need elevation, maybe you can launch from an “Admin” terminal.\<\<

Starting GUI via desktop icon (right click → run as administrator) does work. I take it that by “terminal” you refer to Windows’s cmd.exe? I could do that, but neither way serves for the automation I want. In fact, manually starting is what I do by now.

\>\> assume you’re still looking in event log, but terminal “might” show an error.\<\<

So, possibly “terminal” doesn’t refer to cmd.exe; then I’m unfortunately not a user experienced enough to understand.

\>\>I solve my VSS issue by starting from a batch file,\<\<

I understand that I can export the backup configurations set up via GUI as command line commands. What I’ve not figured out yet is how to get them working by schedule, as the exported command line does not seem to include any information regarding time.

I’m also not sure if I am experienced enough to build a batch file for a job as critical as this - namely, making backups. If I make a mistake in the setup and don’t see it, I’ll end up with no or unusuable backups…

\>\> so answer a UAC prompt:\<\<

Does that mean that if I manage to set up a batch file (which I then would have to run by the task scheduler, instead of starting the GUI - have I got that right?), I’d have to click away an UAC prompt each time I log on? Then I can stick to manually starting duplicati, that’s pretty much the same…

\>\> Having shortcut do escalation was more flexible for me, but Windows Service
possibly could also do the job, but it’s a bit awkward to attach tray icon to that.\<\<

I’ve read through some instructions on using Duplicati as a Windows service, but I never managed to see through that “Windows Service”-business really. I’m afraid this option also drops out due to my lack of knowledge.

\>\> Does TrayIcon actually work right the way you launch? I see info it might not…\<\<

If you refer to the actual job of doing backups: It does. Only recently I managed to restore data backupped from an SD card, which eventually crashed… It’s only that the Duplicati.GUI.TrayIcon-Process crashes. If I only coud rely on Duplicati itself to work without the actual TrayIcon, I wouldn’t need that (If I could access the GUI by another way, for instance). But whenever the process stops working, Duplicati stops making backups also.

What do you refer to?

Ah… That’s seems close to the idea I just said would be suitable for me… I’ve also found the description in the documentation ( [Server | Duplicati](https://docs.duplicati.com/duplicati-programs/server) ), but I can’t figure out how to set up the actual backup jobs then - or whether Duplicati.Server.exe can be started the same way as Duplicati.GUI.TrayIcon.exe can; nor whether configurations and backups already in place will continue to work. Once again, it seems to me this is an option made rather for tech professionals, not for users, experienced as they might deem themselves. I’d possibly be more bold to go ahead, if only we’d not be talking about “critical infrastructure”…

Maybe some day I’ll give one of the ideas another try. For now, I can’t invest enough time.

Thank you, anyway!
